Mummyofasquarepeg

Well, here goes….my very first attempt at blogging. So I guess it’s only polite to introduce myself and what my blog is all about…..I’m a Mummy of two gorgeous (but exhausting) boys aged 8 and 5, a wife and a full time secondary school teacher….

My blog name ‘mummyofasquarepeg’ refers to my youngest son (pictured above) who has Autism Spectrum Condition. He started off in a mainstream school but I felt that it was like trying to bash a square peg into the round hole that is the education system so I call him my square peg. We have been extremely lucky and have managed to get him into an amazing special needs school where he is still a square peg but now he’s in a square hole and it’s so much better for him.

So my blog will mainly be about my musings, experiences and challenges of raising a square peg in a round holed society. Autism is frustrating because it’s an invisible disability and generally people just assume he’s a naughty boy when he’s having a meltdown in the supermarket. When it happens, I’ve taken to not making eye contact with anyone and try to get back to the car as soon as possible even if I have to carry him flailing and wailing in my face.

I hope that by reading my blog, other Mummies of square pegs might take some solace in the fact that they’re not alone in the daily challenges they face.
