Brother of a Square Peg

Why a day out with the sibling of a square peg is really important.

It’s the school Easter holidays and at Edward’s marvellous school they run holiday clubs, so I’ve booked him into them for three days.

So, on the Monday we dropped Edward off and decided that we would have a Mummy and Matthew day. I do feel that this is a particularly important thing to do. I am conscious that having a younger brother with special needs can be a bit of a challenge. Edward is extremely cute, loveable, joyful and adorable but he’s really hard work, so wherever we go he gets a lot of attention. I also worry that I put pressure on Matthew to help me out with him when we’re out and about, for example I say ‘run after him and stop him.’ So a day out together is just what we needed.

We decided that we would go Tenpin bowling. Matthew had only been bowling a couple of times before for friends birthday parties. He always came back buzzing and wanted to go again.

I quite like that you can bowl in your own shoes nowadays but I also miss having to wear the ridiculous looking bowling shoes. Matthew will never get to experience the red and blue bowling shoes and I feel he’s missing out.

We had a great time, even though I won, he was really happy with that and was overjoyed when I got a strike. I think I scored some Mummy points for that too. It was over quite quickly as there was only two of us and we’d booked just one game.

After bowling we went to Pizza Express with our Clubcard vouchers. Matthew loves Italian food not just pizza but he actually adores Tomato and Mozzarella salad so he ordered that for the starter. Then he wanted the Tomato and Mozzarella pizza so we shared a big one of those. Of course we had to have pudding too.

Matthew and I don’t get to spend the day just the two of us very often but it’s something that we need to try and do more often. It’s important to build our relationship without having to cope with the challenges of Edward.

Matthew copes really well having a brother with special needs, he really does love him and likes to look after him. We have to remember that Matthew is still only 8 and shouldn’t have any responsibilities so that’s why it’s important to go out together.

  • What a great day out! But seriously, you don’t have those bowling shoes anymore? This is a disaster!! Looks like Matthew is a fabulous little boy and deserved his one-to-one time with you. Bet you both loved it. Thanks for linking up to #ItsOK

It’s great when you get to spend time with just one child. In the summer holidays my husband takes two days off work and we each get to spend a one to one day with each of the children. #itsok

  • Awww … what a lovely day. It sounds like you’re doing an awesome job as mum to two completely different little boys. Well done mum. P.s. I also love tomato & mozzarella.

  • It looks like a special day out for you both. I find it difficult to balance my time within three children but I’m sure additional needs make it even harder. #stayclassymama
