Mummy of a Square Peg

How Zumba improves my mental health.

If, like me, you have fond memories of sitting by a dimly lit pool on a sultry summers evening in Spain, a gentle breeze blowing through the palm trees, drinking Sangria and listening to Spanish pop music….

Well, every time I go to a Zumba class I am transported to that place and that makes me happy. Except now I’ve got to do some dancing rather than sitting sipping Sangria.

It’s a well known fact that exercise improves mental health by releasing endorphins and for me these endorphins are released in the bucketful at Zumba. Salsa, Cha Cha Cha, Merengue, Samba and Mambo steps, booty shaking and uplifting music….what’s not to love?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not as easy as I thought it was going to be….I thought I would be able to pick up the steps quickly, shake my booty like Shakira and look like one of the professionals from Strictly Come Dancing….erm…not quite…turning to the right when everyone else is turning to the left, not being able to coordinate my arms and legs….and my booty shaking……well try to imagine Mr Blobby shaking his thang….and you have me…

But none of that matters, I am enjoying myself. I am taking care of me. Being a busy working Mum with two energetic boys takes it toll and I’ve learnt that I mustn’t put myself last anymore, that I must have some time out for me. This enables me to function properly and be a better Mother.

Sweaty but happy after a Zumba class.

So if you haven’t tried Zumba before, give it a go! I’m waiting for my Strictly call up any day now….šŸ¤©šŸ’ƒšŸ»

  • Zumba (and Yoga) are two things I’ve always fancied giving a go. I’m a great believer in the mental health benefits of exercise and I’m glad you seem to be enjoying them. #ItsOk

    • Yoga is quite difficult, I find it hard to breathe when I’m supposed to. The music in Zumba is so uplifting.

  • You go girl! I’ve never done Zumba but my mum does it twice a week and raves about it. I’ve not done any for ages but I do love a dancy exercise class – when I can be bothered! #ItsOK

    • For a while, I’d stopped doing all exercise as I couldn’t be bothered and just wanted to sit on the sofa and eat chocolate….but when I’d gained 3 stone and couldn’t fit into any of my work clothes I realised that I desperately needed to do something about it.
