A Successful September for the Square Peg.

On the 7th September, the Square Peg went back to school for the first time since March. So how did he cope?

To be honest, I knew that we wouldn’t have any problems sending him back. During the lockdown period he didn’t question why he wasn’t going to school. He doesn’t have any concept of time so the six months of not not being at school totally bypassed him.

Lots of people assumed that because he was autistic he would struggle with the change in routine of going back to school.

Both my husband and myself knew that on the first day of school, he would just skip into his taxi as if he had been doing it everyday for the past six months and this is exactly what he did. Edward has also gone into a new class with a new teacher and this hasn’t phased him at all.

So far in September there has been a couple of surprising things that Edward has done.

He has started to use the correct names for people he knows. Check out my previous blog about a condition called Prosopagnosia.

It has always been challenging to get Edward to focus on anything academic related, so I was pleasantly surprised when he was finger tracing numbers on the number blocks app.

The other morning there was a beautiful rainbow. Edward saw it out of the window and called me to come and see it. He was very excited as he told me that it was a rainbow with lots of colours in. He then proceeded to point out some of the colours in the rainbow. That was a lovely start to the day and put a smile on my face for sure,

Since lockdown began in March I have not taken the kids into Tesco with me. However, over the summer holidays I took Edward in for the first time. He was absolutely hilarious. He insisted on pushing the trolley himself, which he was pretty good at. Anybody who walked past him he would say ‘Hello’ in the biggest voice. He would also talk about all the products telling me that this is what we need.

He saw some chocolate buttons on the shelf and at the top of his voice says ‘Ooh I love chocolate buttons!’ So he took them from the shelf and put them in the trolley saying ‘Look! I can do shopping!’ The main thing for me is that now he’s taken an interest in shopping and is obsessed with pushing the trolley, means he doesn’t suddenly disappear!

So all in all, the Square Peg has had a lovely successful September and has settled back into school very well.
