Easter 2021 with the Square Peg.
As the COVID restrictions are beginning to ease, we made the most of the Easter weekend by going slightly further afield. So we made sure that every day over the Easter weekend, we went out.
On Good Friday, Matthew (the Square Pegs older brother) wanted to take his mountain bike up onto Dartmoor and have a Pot Noodle in the van. We decided to go to Trowlesworthy Warren near Cadover Bridge. There are some good bumps and slopes that Matthew loves to cycle down. Edward actually surprised us and wanted to take his bike along. I had to hold onto him going down the slopes and he didn’t really like it when the ground was too bumpy, but we’re really pleased that he wanted to give it a go.
Easter Saturday, I took the boys out to Norsworthy Bridge at the end of Burrator Reservoir on Dartmoor. We didn’t bring bikes this time. Instead, Edward spent his time throwing stones, sticks and leaves into the river. It took Matthew less that than five minutes to get wet and muddy. Again, we had lunch in the van but also with the added bonus of an ice cream!
On Easter Sunday, Matthew had his first mountain bike race since October in Grammarcombe Woods. This was Matthew’s first race in the under 12’s category. As he hadn’t raced for so long, he was nervous at the start but he Came through and won.
Previously, I had stopped taking Edward along to watch Matthew in a race. Mainly because his behaviour was so challenging and I end up spending all day chasing him round. However, this time we all went and I have to say that Edward was fabulous. He was happy to cheer on Matthew and didn’t disappear out of sight. He was also extremely excited when he found an Easter egg in the woods.
Then on Easter Monday we met up with Aunty Megan and visited Meldon reservoir, again on Dartmoor but right up at the north end of the moors. We all walked about 5 km from the reservoir out to the viaduct and back again. It was very windy but if Edward keeps his hood up or wears a hat then he is fine.
So I would say it’s been a very positive and successful Easter weekend with the Square Peg.
