Sing-a-long with a Square Peg

People talk a lot about the talents of people with autism and my little square peg is no exception.

Ever since he was a baby, Edward has absolutely LOVED anything to do with music. He always tries to sing along to songs, randomly breaks out into song, dances around to music and it also calms him down. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was on the TV over Christmas and this was the first time he had seen it and now he can’t get enough of it. He gets up and dances and sings to all the songs. His favourite is Me Ole Bamboo, he tries to follow the dance routine and it’s just the funniest thing to watch.

I’ve always played music a lot, at University I spent my student loan on CD’s and I’m champing at the bit whenever anyone mentions the possibility of a music trivia quiz! So the love of music must be in his genes. Edward loves music being played in the house and in the car and loves to sing along. Whenever he sees a musical instrument he can’t stop himself picking it up and trying to play it. As well as all the classics from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, his favourite songs are Ghostbusters, Witch Doctor, Sit down your rocking the boat, Everything is Awesome, I’m a little teapot and Happy Birthday.[wpvideo fLBS0nzK ]

So my question is, how can I develop this talent? If he was a round peg, I would most certainly have enrolled him in a drama group or taken him to singing lessons. But because he is a square peg well that makes it all the more challenging. You see he has an extremely short concentration span i.e. 5 seconds…after that he’ll start jumping around and running off….Edward will only sing songs that Edward wants to sing and if he just doesn’t feel like singing on that day….well he just won’t. I have yet to find a group that would accept that behaviour, but I’ll keep looking. For the time being we might set up a YouTube channel…..watch this space…
