More progress from the Square Peg – January round up!

Oh my goodness! What a start to 2020! January has been such a whirlwind that my January round up is now in February!

The family Square Peg have been working really hard and all of us (apart from Edward) have all had stinking colds for what feels like forever.

The Square Pegs older brother has been competing in the South West Cyclocross league and has had a bike race every weekend. It was tough going but it’s been worth it because Matthew is now the Under 10 South West Cyclocross champion.

I can’t help but be excited that it’s now February. All I can think about is when can we start wearing flip flops? When can we have days out at the beach? BBQ’s? Camping? Etc

Whilst January has been a dark, cold, challenging month for us, The Square Peg has thoroughly enjoyed his January and made some notable steps in progress. For most parents, these are small steps, but for autism families they are huge and require a celebration! Read my previous post about why the smallest steps are massive.

Imaginary play

Edward has begun to develop imaginary play. Children usually start imaginary play around the age of two, when Edward was this age he was in his own little world with no interested in interacting with anyone else.

One evening, he wanted me to sit under a blanket then he wanted to come under it too. I said “Do you want to come into my house?’ He said ‘Yes’ and began to play along. I then asked him if he wanted a cup of tea and a slice of cake and again he responded. Then he pretended to drink the tea and eat the cake. I was so excited by this I couldn’t wait to tell his teacher.

Rolling a dice

Edward found a board game and asked me to play with him. He was really excited to take it in turns to roll the dice. He kept saying ‘You turn Mummy.’ ‘Shake it’ etc. He would also tell what number had been rolled. Edward was excellent at telling me if we had rolled a two but if he rolled a 5 or 6, he insisted that it was a 7!

Trying to get dressed

Edward hasn’t been at all interested in getting himself dressed. He didn’t even want anyone else to get him dressed for that matter. However, there have been a couple of occasions in January where he has insisted ‘I do it myself!’ Such as pulling up his pants and putting his shoes on.

So glad to finally be coming out of the darkness of January. As usual, Edward’s had a fab time! Lets see what progress he makes in February.
