February 2020 in an autism house.
Well, that was a short but not very sweet month, completely due to the horrific weather.
The Square Peg however, has had a fabulous February. Everyday has been an exciting adventure. For us as a family, February was a relatively quiet month, as in the Cyclocross season has finished so we weren’t trekking all over the South West every weekend for Matthew to compete in a bike race. He did however have to go and collect his award for winning the league so he has retained his title as Under 10 South West Cyclocross champion. 🚴🏻♂️🏆🥇
We were lucky to all be off work and school for February half term. We deliberately didn’t make any plans because we were all exhausted from the January term. However, the weather was really bad and we all had stinking colds, so we didn’t feel bad for staying indoors lazing about in pyjamas.
We love the Teletubbies! ❤️
So what has Edward been up to? Well lets start with the Teletubbies. He first loved the Teletubbies when he was three, then he forgot about them for a few years and now, at the age of six, he’s decided that he loves them again.Edward absolutely adores them and particularly favours Po. Every night, I have to wrap them up in his blanket and take them up to his bed.
We have to take all the Teletubbies in the car everytime we go out and Edward insists that they get strapped in safely. When we go to Tesco, Po is the lucky one who gets to come with us. Po particularly loves being taken up the travelator and Edward ensures that he holds on to the rail correctly.
Daddy’s trainers are fun!
Every single day, he never fails to make us laugh. Silly Daddy left his trainers lying around the house, well of course Edward had to try them on for size. Walking round the house saying ‘I’m Daddy!’
Do I really have to go to school?
Edward still continues to love going to school, however, after being out of routine during February half term, trying to get him ready for school on the first day back was really tough. He quite clearly wanted to spend more time hanging out in his pyjamas!
At his wonderful school, he still continues to make big leaps in progress with writing being the most recent one. They sent us this amazing picture. This is the first time that he has attempted to write his name freehand rather than tracing over the letters.

Mummy’s heart melts.
The older sibling of a child with autism really is quite something to behold. Matthew adores his little brother and understands his challenges.
During half term we bought Matthew some Match Attack cards, for those not familiar with them they are football trading cards. Edward kept shouting ‘I want Match Tacks!’ So Matthew sat down with him and explained to him about the Match Attack cards, Edward thought that this was best thing ever. It was such a lovely moment seeing them interacting together and Matthew being so sweet with him.

So these were the highlights of the Square Peg’s February. He is still happy every single day and sees the joy in everything. If ever you’re feeling glum come and see Edward, he will be sure to make you smile. He reminds me of this poem…
