The Square Peg in Lockdown! March 2020 round up!

OMG! No one could have guessed that March 2020 would be the month when the world goes into lockdown. When the schools are closed and everyone should be staying at home.

So how has the Square Peg coped with all of this sudden change? Well, to put it mildly, he doesn’t give a hoot. He doesn’t miss going to school, he could not care less about the horror that is unfolding in the world. He is just continuing to be Edward.

During March, Edward has been busy making lots of small steps in progress and continuing to make us laugh everyday.

Before lockdown, Edward let Daddy brush his front teeth.

And then, a few days later, his top tooth fell out. This time, instead of crunching it and swallowing it like the previous time. he let it fall out. Matthew asked if the tooth fairy was going to come and I said ‘I don’t think there’s any point because Edward doesn’t care a jot. I’ll have to Whastapp the tooth fairy and tell her not to bother.’ Matthew was happy with that explanation.

This month, Edward also demanded that he get dressed himself…..albeit on backwards but nevertheless a big step in progress.

Before lockdown happened, his favourite place to go was to Tesco. He loves to pretend that he’s got a job there which is cleaning up all the bit of cardboard. He thought that Po would also love going to Tesco too, so we took him with us and Edward showed him how to go up the travelator safely.

Edward has also developed a fascination with his reflection inside a spoon. So much so that he had to show Tinky Winky too.

Then lockdown happened and we had to try and homeschool the Square Peg. I am just trying to keep a simple routine with him to start with up until lunchtime and then we’ll go from there.

Trying to engage Edward in academic learning is proving tricky. So to start with I have downloaded the Reading Eggs app which is free for the first month. He loves this so I’m happy with that. When we’ve settled into this new way of living a bit more, I’m hoping to try out some of Gina Davies’ Attention Autism strategies.

We make sure that we do our daily exercise, we are fortunate like we live right next door to some beautiful woods. Edward has learnt to climb over a stile.

Edward has also helped to make cupcakes, he even tasted them without being sick. He has been playing Match Attax with his big brother Matthew, joining in Joe Wicks’ PE lesson and has the best lockdown hairstyles.

So March was a really busy month for the Square Peg and it’s amazing what you can achieve just by staying at home.

Honestly, if you ever feel a bit down in the dumps, watch videos of Edward, he never fails to make people smile.

So how was your first few weeks of lockdown? Let me know how you got on and any advice you can share particularly around homeschooling children with autism.

  • It’s still very early days, I think by end of April it will be a real struggle. Fingers crossed the schools at least go back soon. #StayClassyMama

  • This has been the strangest 4 weeks ever! I’m glad that Edward is finding this quite a positive experience. Part of e is really enjoying having the kids at home and feeling sad at the thought of them going back to school. #stayclassymama

  • He is such a lovely boy. I’m glad he’s copping ok with lockdown and not too stressed, that would be hard on you and him. He’s doing well on his skills too!
