Our autism story

The Square Peg works at Tesco

Daddy Square Peg has worked at Tesco for about 20 years. So Edward has been taken shopping at Tesco his whole life. He has never known another supermarket.

Edward has always loved going to Tesco. He loves going up the travelator and then going down in the lift (aka The Rocket).

Recently, he has been talking about working at Tesco and he goes round and picks up the cardboard.

Fortunately as everyone who works there knows Daddy no one minds.

One day, Daddy came home with a Tesco T shirt, badge and clocking on card for Edward. So of course we had to pretend to go to work.

We found some of the Tesco managers that we know and they were amazing and told Edward what he should be doing.

He had the time of his life. He would pick up the cardboard and put it in the cage. Straighten and move the products to the front of the shelf. Went off (with one of the managers) to get some lemonade for a customer and had his named called out over the tannoy. ‘This is a colleague announcement, please can Edward come to aisle 24!’ He was beyond excited.

He also loved telling everyone to work harder, that they were not going on a break and then some motivation ‘Great job everyone!’

It totally cheered everyone up. Those who were working there and all the customers went home with a smile on their face.

I would just like to say a massive thank you to the staff at Tesco Lee Mill who accommodated us and all the customers who joined in the fun too.
