The Square Peg gets a Caravan

Ever since Mummy was a little girl she has always been camping. Even though she is now a grown up, she still loves it.

Since Matthew was 6 and Edward was 4 Mummy has taken them camping (without Daddy). We have gone from sharing a tent with my friend to owning a van with an awning. I’ve always believed that camping and being outdoors is really beneficial for autistic children. Check out my blog about why you should take you autistic child camping.

These were all fab camping trips, but if it rains, it’s rubbish in a tent. Mummy also detests getting up for a wee in the middle of the night. Many a night I have been lying in my sleeping bag playing the ‘mind over bladder’ game. Saying to myself ‘go to sleep, you don’t really need a wee, if you sleep you’ll forget about it.’ This obviously never works, I’m either just lying awake all night or I give in and get up to trek to the toilets. So what is the answer to this dilemma? Yes that’s right! It’s a caravan!!

So we have finally got ourselves a caravan. We have put it on seasonal pitch on Tencreek Holiday Park in Looe, Cornwall. This is only 50 minutes drive away from our house so we can pop down there frequently.

Edward adores hanging out on a holiday park. He loves the freedom of running around outside, finding leaves, sticks and rocks. He loves going to the play park and playing in the arcade.

Then, as soon as he’s had enough of all of this excitement he loves to go back to the caravan. Once he’s back in the caravan, he fetches his duvet and blankets and tucks himself up on the sofa and plays on the iPad.

Being at the caravan is certainly my happy place, it’s somewhere where we can go to get away from the stresses and strains of life. Everytime we go, even if it’s for one night, it feels like we’ve been on holiday. Even though it costs money and we are now in a recession, I really hope we can still afford it as it is so beneficial for us as a special needs family.
